Just wondering which string plattern is slightly better for net/volley shot. I suspect the 16*18 (open string plattern) is better due to the slightly more kick?

"slightly more kick"....
For volleys, why would a better kicking serve have any effect?
I think, doesn't matter and DEPENDS!
For volleys, most important to get sideways, short prep backswing, high to low stroke but not cut, stable body and forward if there's time, and stroke the ball like it's a backspin groundie, not a backspin chop.
Depth should be between service line and baseline.
String patterns don't matter on volleys, they matter for durability with strong hard hitters. More or less bite doesn't matter, as strings will bite enough with any modern string pattern.
And 18x20 is offset by the fact most players can string this pattern looser than 16x19, so the looser strings can bite just fine.
More important is the volleyer's skills.
Less important is the weight, balance, size, and strings of the racket.
Least important is string pattern.
Lots of top pros play with 18x20, just like lots play with 16x19.
