Is Agassi the greatest player ever?
I know Sampras won more grand slams but Agassi won more matches and the only one still playing to have won all 4 grand slams on all surfaces
Nah.
Pretty damn close though.
Probably my favourite player of all time, but in terms of greatness.. I think he comes close to but not better than Sampras or Laver (now I show my age).
The most talented? close second to McEnroe in terms of natural talent.
He's certainly in my top 10, and probably in my personal top 3.
To be fair, he's probably the best All round tennis player I've ever seen, it's only his mental side that has ever let him down. I still to this day think that Goran losing it in the Wimbledon final is what made him.
I remember watching him burst on to the scene in his jean shorts thinking wow. But after his loses to Gomez, his thumping by Sampras, then his choking to Courier in his first few Grandslam finals I thought..all the talent in the world..no bottle (another Jimmy White- for snooker fans). Still Goran choked first and the rest is history.
So, in short:In terms of all-round ability/shot-making: Yes, Mentally: NO.
McEnroe is truly the most naturally talented.
Agassi is the hardest worker.
Sampas must be considered only because of the Grand Slam total.
Laver for his Grand Slams of another era.
Bjorn for his quiet proficiency.
My personally favorites are McEnroe and Agrassi. How would you like to see them play doubles together!!!
I'd say top ten ever.
Sampras
Agassi
Laver
Borg
McEnroe
Connors
I think you have to put him up there as one of the best of all times, due to the fact that he has one all 4 majors and on 4 different surfaces. Saying that, I am biased as he has been my favourite male player since he first appeared on the tour.
he is th greatest player in my heart
IMO Ken Rosewall is the greatest ever. He won the French, US & Aussie Opens a couple of times each before he turned pro in 1957. Then he couldn't play the Grand Slams for 11 years!!!!!!!!! This was when he would have been at his peak. Then he comes back and wins the US Open, French Open and Aussie Open again. Was 4 times a Wimbledon finalist and would certainly have won Wimbledon if he could have played during his 11 years of banishment. In 1971 and 1972 he also won the WCT Championships (beating Laver in 2 phenomenal finals) to prove his was still one of the greatest - and he was in his mid 30s. I think he could have won about 18 Grand Slam singles titles had he been able to play the Slams from 57-68.
Laver also turned pro and couldn't play from 1963-68. So he would certainly have won a lot more too, considering he completed the GRAND SLAM in 1962 and 1969 and didn't play any Glams for 5 years at his peak as well.
And who knows how good Gonzales could be been in terms of Grand Slam greatness, and some of the other pros. But Rosewall is my pick.
I have won..... umm... Well i just am.
For the record.. I think that if Andre had a bigger serve to go with his kickass ground game there would be no question... As far as best EVER I can't say cause I never saw guys like Laver play. 4 grand slams in 1 year is sick! That has to put him at the top.
i'm not sure if he's the best player all-time but he's the best returner and best in passing shots IMO
We say agassi is the best professional player in the universe
because he brought the best women player of the earth ----graff
back home.!!!!!!!!!
:o
.
THE AUSSIE LEW HOAD WAS THE GREATEST TENNIS PLAYER EVER. THERE'S NO DOUBT ABOUT IT.
certainly not the best of all time...but the player i enjoyed watching the most was Stephan Edberg...the kick serve, soft volleys, constant foot faults, was so fun to watch.
I think, if considered what have been reached and won Borg and Sampras are among the greatest.:D
I don't think Agassi is one of the greatest, but his longevity is amazing and a sentimental favorite. I wouldn't put Sampras at the greatest either because he hasn't won on all surfaces. I would have to go with Laver. I'm sure many of you never saw him play.

As a wsie woman by the name of Martina Navratalova once said, you can't define the greatest player, because there are so many different factors that change things from generation to generation! Agassi is one pf the best his Generation and even this generation (that's if he can continue to win more majors for the next few years.) I agree with Martina's statement, technology is changing tennis so much, comparing players of different generations is now a little difficult and unfar to many players. For me, Agassi is a living tennis legand, but THE BEST, um, i'm not so sure. Look at the guys volley, i mean he hardly comes to the net, if he did, he would probably be unstopable. However, i regard him as one of the all time greats, certainly!!!!!!!!!!:)
Agassi is one of the best, but the greatest? I don't think so. He has won on every surface, but I don't think he has been a dominant player that others fear.

i guess he is one of the greatest of all time.it's not only about his extreme athletic capabilities,he has mental strength and control as well.he's not one of my favourites, but i enjoy watching his matches just because he goes for the big shot everytime he can and his topspin serves are really cool!! watch out for him he can win a slam this season!
Well... now Safin's better...
Rod Laver is the greatest. He's the only male to win 2 Grand Slams and he would of won even more. His first Grand Slam came as an amateur. When he turned pro he was not allowed to play in the Grand Slam touraments until 1968 when they accepted professionals. He then won all four majors again as a pro, ten years later! Yes, 10 years between Grand Slams.
I think he has to be considered one of the greatest, because of he has been successful in not just his own generation, but in the next generation where the technology as well the competition has gotten better and more difficult. Not trying to take anything away from players like McEnroe, who was probably the most talented player to play the game, but agassi has not only survived but thrived facing such adversity.
I'm 40. I watched a few matches with Mcenroy, Borg, many with Sampras, many with Agassi. I understand peoples in ages love old times, old players, traditions and etc. It seems to them that old is better than new. But times is changing, tennis is in continious progress as players themselves. To become first today is much harder than 10 years ago, and 100 times harder than 20-30 years ago.
So from my opinion the history never new such a great and talantic tennis-player as Roger Federer.
If he stays healthy, Roger Federer will be the greatest ever. He has a command of the court and all aspects of the game that none of the forementioned players had. Just one example -- Agassi's return of serve, which is indeed great. Federer's is just as good, if not better.
Ken Rosewall and Lew Hoad? Not even the best of their time, much less all time (although I was a big Hoad fan as a kid).
I would probably have to agree with everyones points on this question regarding Agassi as being the best and those who oppose him and yes I will admit that I am a MASSIVE Agassi fan but I highly doubt in anyway that my supporting him would make my opinion of him biast in any way at all.
To say the greatest ever I would break that into 2 catagories when assessing this subject: On court ability and off court ability while yes you could probably argue that his on court ability has been matched and surpassed at times throughout his somewhat turbulent career he has also provided some of the on court highlights of all time who can forget his thrilling duels with Sampras throughout the 90's or for that matter his amazing comeback from 141st to first from 1997 to 1999 or what about his emotional win at wimbledon in 1992 these are only testament to his strength and mental resilience that has placed him very very high on the list of all time greats.
Off court of course he has captivated nearly everyone who follows tennis at some stage or another whether it be his overwhelming joy at Wimbledon in 1992 or be it his amazing thirst for the spotlight in every game he plays this is the guy remember that gets the whole arena behind him at every country he plays in he is the most recognisable player still competing in tennis today which probably stands out moreso today because tennis at the present stage is full of lifeless personalityless tennis robots at the moment who either want to swear at someone or break their racket and couldnt get a laugh in after match interviews if they tried only degrading the game in a time where Agassi has not only matured with aged but gotten better with age and is now the leading ambasitor for young aspiring tennis players for future generations.
If you want to measure someones ranking of alltime compared to the greats of the game surely you would also look at what they personally have given to tennis along with their unhumanly insane ability on the court. Could you honestly say McEnroe was a good example for upcoming kids in tennis with his somewhat unsavoury tongue that spat of profanity like it was the new english standard for his national anthem? Or could you say Hewitt was a good representative for the sport with his filthy mouth and his violent behavior towards his racket? Or what about Sampras a Drunken Womaniser if I ever did see one but he won a truck load of Grand Slams but alot of people would agree with me when I say his amazing ability to buckle under the pressure and waste golden opportunities along with his not to user friendly off court life will allways be held against his worth in the all time stakes.
Yes Agassi has been known to reel off profanities from time to time but this is the man who showed up in tennis and instantly started setting a whole new standerd on the way tennis should and could be played. Could you honestly say anyone has given a more crowd pleasing contribution be it after match interviews to heart in mouth victores in the history of the game?
I think not.
No, agassi is not the greatest. Ya, he has more wins than Pete, but he has played 5 more years than him. Also, it took Andre 7 years to win his first grand slam, apposed to Sampras's 5 slams in 7 years---winning 13 titles before turning 29. Even Federer accomplished more by his 7th season. Hello! 5 slams in seven years, to Agassi's 5 slams in 14 years. He wasn't all that good his first ten years on the tour, it only changed when he switched coaches and became better conditioned. I will give him credit for winning all 4 grand slams, but as far as being the best, he is maybe 4th or 5th.
fedroger, where do you come up with this stuff?

those were cool facts
but y is ur name fedroger when u like pete?

For clueless: I got my information from CBS:tennis. They have a lot of information.
For I love Henin: Those are my two favorite players, and I use fedroger to log in because it was easy to remember.
For pointless and meaningless knowledge: It's tennis forum, dumbass!
Anyways, Sampras is the best because he accomplished the most on the court, in my opinion. I used Samprass to argue the Agassi point, that's all. Like I said, Federer will probably be the best, but until he wins 10 or more slam titles, he will be 2nd, and Sampras will still rule.
you go ahead, you have your pointless and meaningless life. sorry for interfering.
that was a cool idea
and surely sampras will still rule and federer wont fet 13 grand slams
i love henin
and she wont lose a single match
i hope :D
hey everybody!
I've red almost everything has been written here...many different opinions...My favourite as a kid was Sampras. He was my favourite in 1995 when people were on their way of saying, well this guy might break every rekord. Well, I have an interesting observation to shere...
Sampras turned pro in 1988.
Federer turned pro in 1998.
Sampras won his first slam in 1990 - US Open
Federer won his first slam in 2003 - Wimbledon.
Sampras won his second slam in 1993 - Wimbledon.
Federer won his second in 2004 - Australian Open.
Sampras won his third in 1993 - US Open.
Federer won his third in 2004 Wimbledon.
Sampras won his fourth in 1994 - Australian Open.
Federer won his foruth in 2004 - US Open.
Sampras won his fith in 1994 - Wimbledon.
Compare it, there is a decade distance between the two of them. Their slam performances are pretty similar. Only that Federer win his first slam later in his career. So that is 1+ for Sampars. Sampras didn's won the US in 1994 as Federe did in 2004. So 1+ for Federer. They are evey up to know. Sampras won the 1995 US, will Federer win the 2005 US??? :)
Well, regarding the disputes here, who might be the greatest ever, it is very difficult to say. What kind of player Rod Laver would have become, if he playes in the 1990's? Obviously tennis became in time much more competitie and the Sampras of today obviously would have beaten the Laver in 1962...every generation has his outstandig palyer. Federer seems to be sombody who might catch Sampras in time. Still, there is a long way to go. He has to win at least 9 more slams and finish the world ranking 4 more times at no 1 spot. That is not going to be easy. If someone can do that, than Federer is the man IMO, but he has to play 6-7 years from now. That is a long time...to keep this kind of dominant form, hm, that will not be easy at all!
The way Federer is playing now and days, he probably is the best, especially of his generation, there is no doubt about it! Still, Federer has opponents like Hewitt, Safin, Roddick, Nadal is a new one. His opponents are not really troubeling him. Sampras started in the late 1980's and played Lendl, Connors and McEnroe too. I am not saying those guys were as competitive like 5-10 years later, but he cought them, and played them, he played connors twice, he beat him twice, he played McEnroe 3 times, bet him 3 times, he played Lendl 8 times, beat him 5 times, including on his way to his 1st us crown...
Nevertheless, he had tought opponent as his career. Edberg and Bercker should be considerer first. Then Courrier, Ivanisevici, Chang and Michael Stich. All of them managed to reach "at least" the no 2. in the world rankings. Those were tought opponents. And then, probalby his toughest one, Agassi. They played 34 times. Sampras won 20 of them. In the slams, well, they met 2 at the aussie open, Agassi won both of them. At the french they met once, Agassi won that in '92. At Wimbledon they met twice, Sampras won both matches, in 1993 and 1999 - the final. Then the US, they met 4 times at the US, 3 times in the final. Sampras won all 4. On his way sampras had Muster, Rios, Krajicek and some other tought opponents. I think at that time Sampras had a much harder time then Federer has today. One might say, well, Federer is simply too god for everybody, that cold mean though, he is in front of his generation, and he is really outstanding, and he is the all time greatest. I don't know, that is a tough call and I think such a call should't be even made...let's agree, that Agassi, Sampras, Laver, Emmerson, Federer, all of them are/were magnificent players...
thnx if you read that :)
I like Agassi, he was and is fun to watch, don't get me wrong. Yes, his latter game has improved since he first came on the tour. But facts inpress me, not someone's biased opinion of their favorite player. No offense.
Good job, Tibor. You impressed me with your knowledge.
Fedroger, your Sampras-Federer stat's aren't bad either :) I have to agree with you when you say it is kind of annoying, when everybody says his or her favourite player is the best ever. Facts, they really speak for themselvs.
well, in the last 10 years I spent really a lot of time with tennis, and the ammount of information in my head about tennis is to be considered. Thnx for the compliment!
wat do you think abt sexy henin
hm, what do I think about sexy Henin? She is a great player. At the begining, when she came on the tour, I never thought she could become that good. She surprised me actually the most at the US Open, when she won, in 2003. She is quite small, and she has a heck of a serve. Look at Hingis. She was 3 cm highter then Henin, but her serve can't come near to Henins. She can sometimes play actually serve and volley. She played her very fist slam final at Wimbledon, let's not foget that. She woun't win Wimbledon 7 times like Graf did, but I think she has the potential to win on graas at least once too. I like Henin as a player too, she is one of my favourites :)
