On being relativistic
I like Tibors latest post. Some relativism is OK. It is difficult to label Him och Her to be the greatest of all times. Maybe one could pick the best five or ten of each decade? Anyone for trying?
What I saw was the very first post that started the whole thread and made
me jump on the keyboard; Is Agassi the greatest?
IF someone IS to be labeled the very best all times, I think Laver stands a much better chance than Agassi and I argued in the previous post.
The prerequisits for such a timeless contest would be I guess, how outstanding he or she was in their contemporary times. And Laver certainly was the champ of the champs for many years (although some have claimed slightly older aussies Hoad and Rosewall to be even sharper and yes, they were great, but I would argue in favour of Laver still).
Others from even earlier ages that we must not count out from the discussion are Tilden and Budge. The latter, Donald Budge won a Grand Slam before the second world war and then got halted in his career due to the war.
By the way, not being so young anymore, let me tell that I have actually seen Laver playing live (and Hoad. Rosewall and Gonzales even, very nice memories).

Likable, lovable or the best?
Dear I love Henin, I have noting against her,
but that question is quite another thread isnīt it?
What player is the most likable or lovable?
Let me pick one player out of the semi-antique
tennis history I really liked, the dane Torben Ulrich.
He was a jazz musician, wore long hair before
the Beatles and played with such a feeling and
enthusiasm.
He never managed to win the great tournaments
but his style and temper was really lovable.
He loved the game and the public loved him.
But back again to the question about the greater
among the greatest, all times! Who would like to
pick 10 players per decade over the last 100 years?
Ending with the period of the 5 last years (Federer
definitly being one of those
)

Let us continue...
Dear Tibor,
I certainly read your long post from last month and found it very interesting
and full of knowledge and wise nuances.
I still argue to claim Laver to be the greatest of all times, given
the dominance in the contemporary scene as I think is the only
possible way of comparing. This standpoint was of cource inspired by the name of the thread (Is Agassi the greatest?).
Apart from Laver = Nr 1, I think it is difficult to compare though, just as you
have argued.
Otherwise I am all for your way of reasoning and still think it would
be a nice excercise to pick the ten best per decade over the last hundred
years, don īt you think? Do you want to start?

the allrounf tennis player
Aggasi won at least all four grandslams. On the other hand Pete Sampras has won 14 grand slam titles including 7 wimbledon titles. I think he is the best grass court player that has ever lived. His game was exiting, I mean he was a great serve and volley player. Serve and volley players are veru rare today.

wow, the best of each decade? that is going to be a tough one! well, you can start if you wish to...I am going to try to express my opinion about your choice

Best from the decades...
OK, I will give it a little try, but first of all you must give me some
time, since I am a little bit stressed at the moment. Secondly I think
it will be difficult to perform as many as ten per decade (allow me
to work some other version out) and finally (and this makes me
blush) I definitely think others should undertake the womensī
greatest-ever ranking. Not that it is less important (of cource
not!!) but my knowledge is much lesser.
So - stand by and I will reload.. :-)

suggestion
well, let's make it the best 3 of each decade! Starting from the 1930's. That's as far I can go back. Sorry.
