when to dip / dink the ball over the net?

okay, i just learnt this technique (still need to perfect it) but I'm not sure when to use it. I know it's good to do when the opponent rushes the net , as a volley is hard to handle that comes to the feet. but when else do we dip / dink the ball over the net? passing shots too maybe, rather than passing shots that travel deep like normal groundies? short balls that we put away for winners? what about crosscourt shots that take the player out wide?

just need some clarification on when this kind of shot is appropriate. Thank you

Dink? You want to dink the ball over the net? Are you insane?
Now, dipping it, that is an entirely different thing - to dip the ball into the feet of your opponent, you need to hit it with lots of topspin, basically aim a short topspin groundstroke at his body, and it should dip into the feet.
You definitely want to use topspin for any and all attempts to hit angled shots. For passing shots, slice can actually be a very good idea since it keeps the ball low and hard to return decisively.
If, on the other hand, your opponent has hit a short, weak ball and is far away from the net, you should hit a drop shot.

Yeah, never dink. Even when your opponent is sitting in the bleachers, after you have run him out there, you STROKE your winner into the open court.
Sharp dippers are great for angled CC, hit shorter than the service line so the ball goes off the doubles alley, making the opponent run.
