Thumbs up Importance of Sports Nutrition – Fueling Success

Every athlete should have a solid understanding of what their body needs in order to function at its peak during competition. If you take your career seriously and want to perform at your best during tournaments then you must have a practical daily eating plan that emphasizes on:

    1. Providing fuel for your physical activities
    2. Repairing and rebuilding muscle tissue after competition
    3. Optimizing athletic performance during competition
    4. Promoting overall health and wellness

    Providing Fuel for Physical Activity

Your diet should provide enough energy so that you can perform on the tennis court effectively. Most athletes however take in fewer calories than they need, due to different reasons (e.g. vanity – body needs to look a certain way), which negatively affects their performance. Some athletes even loose weight throughout the season, which should never happen because when you loose weight then you also decrease the amount of fuel you have available because your glycogen stores decrease as well as fat-free mass (muscle mass). If you don’t consume enough carbohydrates then your body starts using muscle protein (branch chain amino acids) to replenish glycogen stores!

This post is as true as it gets. I have been having to change the eating and supplemental diets of some of the best juniors in the country for the past 3 weeks. It boggles my mind that they are so clueless to the fact. If you don't fuel the race car, how can you expect it to win?

    The Nutrition Trap

TennisKing1 thank you for your comment. When you think about it, it is not really surprising that many tennis players and their parents don't know much about nutrition.

Here are some of the reasons why many tennis parents and players alike don’t know anything or very little about nutrition:

    1. No exposure to nutrition in schools
    2. Food giants try to keep the general public as uneducated about nutrition as possible
    3. Unreliable sources
    4. Fast food is the cheapest food, most heavily advertised, and most convenient to buy

No Exposure to Nutrition in Schools

It doesn’t matter what levels of education you possess, GED/High School Diploma or PhD, the core curriculum in schools and universities generally doesn’t include any nutrition courses hence people don’t know anything about nutrition; you need to have self motivation and elect to take a nutrition class.

Another option is that you walk into your local book store or order your nutrition books online. Either way you slice it, you must have the desire to learn about nutrition.

I'm amazed that people trying to reach the top in an intense physical sport wouldn't do some research on their own. It's like trying to run with one leg.

It freaks me out how poorly people eat in general. The same holds true for someone who is in school or works in an office using brainpower more so than physicality. If you don't fuel up correctly you will not operate up to your fullest potential.

I believe in the adage "garbage in, garbage out"! There is no substitute for good wholesome foods to provide what we all need to function at our best.

Also supplements are just what they say they are, supplemental. Additional sustenance needed for extended periods of performance above normal or at high levels of exertion not something to be used as a substitute for a well balanced meal.

A lot of the time it boils down to parents not having the time to cook properly for their children. Fast food or processed food is quicker. A good diet is so important for tennis.
