    Technique vs. Technology

What is the reason for increased player capabilities in modern tennis? Are players learning the game better or is it simply due to composite rackets?

You are making an assumption in the question. If anything, modern technology has made life easier but the players are no more capable. Give them old wooden rackets and gut strings and see how capable they are.

I didn't make an assumption at all. Players hit the ball harder now then they ever did before, thus making them more capable. I was simply asking if this is 100% due to technology or if the technique/physique/strategy of modern players is more advanced than back in the day.

Hitting the ball harder = being more capable.
Oh sorry, you didn't specify what they were supposed to be more capable of.
